According to Natural Liberation<\/a> by Padmasambhava it is possible to attain the dream state in only 30 days or at most in 2-3 months – at least once – even if one has broken Samayas <\/strong>(tantric wows)<\/em> by doing Vajrasattva<\/a> <\/strong>(tib. Dorje Sempa, eng. Diamond Mind)<\/em> purification mantras.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Dispelling obstacles of dreaming<\/h3>\n

    \u00a0For the dream yogi obstacles are fourfold:<\/strong><\/h4>\n
      \n
    1. Overcoming waking up unwillingly<\/strong><\/li>\n
    2. Overcoming forgetfulness<\/strong><\/li>\n
    3. Overcoming confusion<\/strong><\/li>\n
    4. Overcoming lethargy or laziness
      \n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      <\/h3>\n

      Overcoming waking up unwillingly<\/h3>\n

      Every lucid dreamer and dream yogi have the experience – mainly in the beginning of the practice – to wake up when the dream state is recognized thinking: \u201cThis is a dream\u201d. The sheer enthusiasm of finally realizing the dream state dispels the dream consciousness (substratum consciousness, Skt. Alayavij\u0146ana). To counteract this \u201cNatural Liberation\u201d recommends:<\/p>\n

      \u201cMaintain your attention at the level of the heart and below, and focus your mind on a black bindu*<\/span> the size of a pea, called the \u201csyllable of darkness,\u201d on the soles of the feet\u201d \u2013 Guru Rinpoche.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

      *(\u201cskt. Bindu term meaning “point” or “dot”. \u201c\u2013 Wikipedia)<\/em><\/p>\n

      Doing so will remedy waking up prematurely.<\/p>\n

      Overcoming forgetfulness<\/h3>\n

      By forgetfulness is meant realizing the dream state but instantly becoming confused and then continuing dreaming as normal, non-lucidly. To remedy forgetfulness training in the illusory body<\/a> is recommend while during daytime becoming familiarized with \u201cenvisioning the dream state\u201d. Then at bed time cultivate right motivation with yearning:<\/p>\n

      \u201cMay I know the dream state as the dream state and not become confused\u201d \u2013 Natural Liberation<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

      Furthermore \u201ccultivate mindfulness\u201d:<\/p>\n

      \u201cAlso, when I am apprehending the dream state, may I not become confused\u201d \u2013 Natural Liberation<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

      Doing so will remedy forgetfulness.<\/p>\n

      Overcoming confusion<\/h3>\n

      \u201cIf your dreams are solely deceptive appearances of detrimental latent propensities, your awareness becomes diffused and you never recognize the dream state at all\u201d \u2013 Natural Liberation<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

      To overcome confusion three remedies are given:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Train in the illusory body<\/a> while during daytime becoming familiarized with \u201cenvisioning the dream state\u201d.<\/li>\n
      2. Do purification practice and offerings (ganacakra<\/a>).<\/li>\n
      3. Forcefully practice pranayama<\/a> (Skt. pr\u0101\u1e47\u0101y\u0101ma<\/em>: “extension of the prana<\/a> or breath”).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Continuously training like this will overcome confusion.<\/p>\n

        Overcoming lack of practice caused by insomnia<\/h3>\n

        If the enthusiasm and expectation of dream yoga causes insomnia this can be alleviated by visualizing a black bindu in the center of the heart and then:<\/p>\n

        \u201cBring forth the anticipation without force and just for an instant, and by releasing your awareness without meditation on sleep, you will fall asleep and apprehend the dream state\u201d \u2013 Natural Liberation<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

        Doing so will remedy insomnia.<\/p>\n

        Overcoming lethargy or laziness<\/h3>\n

        If after accomplishing the dream state the practitioner loses interest in practice and maybe think \u201cI accomplished the dream state\u201d Natural Liberation gives this remedy:<\/p>\n

        \u201c\u2026 meditate on the difficulty of obtaining a human life of leisure and endowment and on death and impermanence\u2026 and you will again apprehend the dream state\u201d \u2013 Guru Rinpoche<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

        And so the remedies for the dispelling obstacles of attaining the dream state are completed. Natural Liberation goes further by explaining how to transform the dream state into the clear light<\/strong>. An article on this will follow at a later time.<\/p>\n
